Athletes of the Week

Mitch Guest - Glen Burnie, basketball

Photo: Mitch GuestGuest, a 5-foot-8 senior guard, captured Most Valuable Player honors at last weekend's J.T. Bogle Invitational, where he led the host Gophers to the tournament championship.

In a 65-48 victory over Edgewood in a first-round game Friday, Guest, an All-Metro selection last season, scored 20 points to go along with eight rebounds, five assists and three steals. He followed that with a 27-point, six-rebound, five-assist and three-steal performance Saturday, leading the No.7 Gophers (6-0) to a 69-57 win over DuVal of Prince George's County in the tournament final.

With his 47 points in the two games, Guest, who scored 41 against Patuxent two weeks ago, became only the fourth Gopher to surpass the 1,000-point plateau.

For the season, Guest is averaging 26.6 points, five rebounds, four steals and four assists per game.

Newly No. 1 St. Frances too much for Gibbons

St. Frances is one of the last boys basketball teams an opponent wants to fly up and down the court with trading baskets. Upstart Cardinal Gibbons got into that kind of game with the top-ranked Panthers last night and suffered its first loss, 96-85, at home.

Photo: Darnell HarrisPhoto: Gordon BrownPhoto: Gordon ChaseThe teams shot extremely well in the up-tempo game. Darnell Harris led the victors of coach William Wells with 25 points. Gordon "Gus" Chase and Gordon Brown added 21 each as the Panthers shot 56 percent from the field, hitting 34 of 61 shots. Two other Panthers were in double figures as Darron Edwards scored 18 and Rashawn Alexander had 11.

Gibbons shot 53 percent on 32 of 60 attempts, but the Panthers (8-1) were able to overcome Leon Williams' 31 points and 13 rebounds. Kenny Hasbrouck had 22 points, Brett Foelber added 16 and Mike Grace had three three-pointers and 13 points for Gibbons (7-1). Williams, a 6-foot-8 center who is headed to Ohio University, had 27 points through three periods as the Crusaders took a 74-71 lead into the final eight minutes.

St. Frances simply outran the Crusaders in the last period, outscoring the hosts 25-11 at Gibbons' O. Ray Mullis Gym. The Panthers sank 12 of 17 free-throw attempts, including 10 in a row at one point, to pull away in the last eight minutes.

"It concerned me early that we were trading baskets with them," said Gibbons coach Bob Flynn, who appears to have built a Baltimore Catholic League contender at the southwest school.

"St. Frances is so good, so consistent offensively. It's so hard to get stops on them. They wore us down at the end."

Despite the fact that Gibbons might be the most improved team in the league, the Panthers were not worried. "No, we're veterans and we've been here before," said Chase, who also had eight rebounds. "We play a team game and stepped it up and got the job done."

Harris, a flashy senior guard, definitely stepped it up and was 6-for-6 at the line in the final period. "Yeah, we had to step it up in the last couple minutes," said Harris. "We decided this was a win we needed to build our confidence playing as a team."

Chase and Harris agreed that moving to No. 1 in The Sun poll yesterday got the Panthers revved up. "It motivated us even more because there are lot of doubters out there thinking we aren't No. 1," said Chase.

"We've got to hold our ground. Their fans were saying that they were No. 1. But we beat them three times last year and we're No. 1."

Two sport letterman, Baltimore Select Player and future Maryland Terp football player earns Player of the Year honors!!!

All-Harford County Football Teams

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Photo: Erin HendersonErin Henderson

Aberdeen, senior, quarterback

Told for years that he would never measure up to his brother, E.J., the former Maryland All-American linebacker, Henderson issued a resounding response this season.

The response came with touchdown passes (20, with 1,580 yards passing) and touchdown runs (eight, with 883 yards rushing), but most importantly, it came with true grit.

The 6-foot-3, 225-pound quarterback, who is headed to Maryland, did everything for the Eagles - he was their leading tackler, too, as a linebacker - but no statistic could trump his gutsy performance in Aberdeen's 33-25 overtime victory over Potomac Wednesday in the Class 2A state title game.

Essentially playing on one leg because of a badly sprained ankle, and without his contact lenses, which fell out early in the game, Henderson broke out of a funk to throw three touchdown passes. His second was a 17-yard, game-tying strike to Ryan McVey with 2:17 to play. His final one, an 11-yard connection with Devron Galloway in overtime, was the game-winner.

Said Aberdeen coach Joe Harbert: "He's a warrior. There's nothing more that can you say about the kid."

All-Baltimore City/County football teams

FIRST TEAM OFFENSE

Photo: Corey DavisCory Davis, McDonogh
A tremendous leaper who also plays basketball for the Eagles, the senior wide receiver stands 6-feet and weighs 180 pounds - an imposing threat for any defender. His 42 catches for 14 touchdowns and 560 yards ranked among the area's best.

FIRST TEAM DEFENSE

Photo: Cameron GoldbergCameron Goldberg, McDonogh
The 6-6, 260-pound two-way lineman accumulated 12 sacks and 82 tackles. Stanford, Duke and California have offered scholarships, and Virginia, Maryland and Wake Forest also are interested in him.

Photo: Keith MalloryKeith Mallory, Woodlawn
The gifted, 6-3, 170-pound senior returned two of his six interceptions for touchdowns from his defensive back position, and made 33 solo tackles among his total of 47. Colorado has offered him a scholarship, and Boston College, Morgan State, Delaware State and Howard are interested.

All-Anne Arundel County football teams

FIRST TEAM DEFENSE

Photo: Brandon AlbertBrandon Albert, Glen Burnie
Extremely agile and athletic for a 6-7, 320-pounder, Albert anchored both the offensive and defensive lines of the Gophers. On defense, Albert was an immovable force who used his quick feet to run down opposing ball carriers and make 65 tackles.

Boys basketball preseason top 20

1. Walbrook

Last season: 16-8, ranked No. 12

With a wealth of experienced players led by junior Velmar Coleman, the Warriors are the team to beat in the city and 4A North.

2. St. Frances

Last season: 20-7, No. 11

Few teams, if any, combine the quickness and experience of the Panthers.

3. Lake Clifton

Last season: 20-5, No. 4

The Lakers' strength is the sterling backcourt of Paris Carter and Chester Frazier.

4. Mount St. Joseph

Last season: 29-5, No. 3

The defending BCL regular season and tournament champs have enough returning firepower led by Will Thomas, Brian Johnson and Leroy Mack to make another run.

5. Arch. Spalding

Last season: 26-7, No. 6

It's a matter of how fast the somewhat unproven cast around Rudy Gay and Jesse Brooks develops for the Cavaliers to regain their BCL title of two years ago.

6. Dunbar

Last season: 25-2, No. 1

Hit hard by graduation, the defending Class 1A state champion Poets, who have eight state titles since 1993, expect to rebuild around 6-7 Barry Jenifer.

7. McDonogh

Last season: 25-5, No. 9

The sharpshooting trio of Justin Drummond, Jon Brick and Corey Davis makes the Eagles a strong contender in the MIAA A Conference.

8. Douglass

Last season: 21-3, No. 7

With Jermaine Bolden, Anthony Baglin and Troy Smith, the Ducks are ready to return to glory.

9. Cardinal Gibbons

Last season: 17-11, No. 19

The Crusaders are off to a 3-0 start that includes a 76-73 win over DeMatha this week.

10. Annapolis

Last season: 23-2, No. 5

The Panthers are the winningest team in the area over the last five years at 120-8.

11. Glen Burnie

Last season: 19-6, No. 10

The team is led by high scoring Mitch Guest and 6-7 center Brandon Albert, plus Southwestern transfer Delayne Nelson.

12. Woodlawn

Last season: 14-7, unranked

The flashy backcourt of Lance Fuller and Keith Mallory make the Warriors the Baltimore County team to beat.

13. Calvert Hall

Last season: 14-16, unranked

The Cardinals get help from transfers in 6-7 Ryan Hournihan from Dulaney and Mike Newton from Glen Burnie.

14. Randallstown

Last season: 22-2, No. 2

The Rams are in a rebuilding mode, but who better than coach Kim Rivers to keep it going.

15. Towson Catholic

Last season: 11-16, unranked

The Owls have sufferred through two losing seasons but that should change this season with an experienced group.

16. Southern-Balto.

Last season: 14-9, No. 20

Building around Jerrell Green, the Bulldogs have quickness they hope will translate into a run at Dunbar in the 1A South.

17. Long Reach

Last season: 19-5, No. 16

With a returning backcourt of Mike Smelkinson and Jared Bradford, the Lightning is expected to be Howard County's top team.

18. Aberdeen

Last season: 15-7, unranked

The trio of Erin Henderson, Shawn Lewis and Phillip Brown should get it going.

19. Westminster

Last season: 11-11, unranked

Five returning starters, including Ryan Carr (13.0 pts.) and Brandon Costley (10.0), make the Owls the team to beat in Carroll County.

20. Lansdowne

Last season: 14-8, unranked

This could be the year the Vikings make a run at the Baltimore County 2A/1A title and possibly the 2A North.

The Sun Paper's Baltimore Area Players to watch for the 2003-2004 Season

Jermaine Bolden

Douglass, guard

A flashy, 5-foot-7 guard who was All-Metro last season as a junior, Bolden averaged 17.3 points, 4.3 assists and 3.5 rebounds for the 21-3 Ducks. Transferring from Northern-B last year, Bolden strengthened the backcourt of the Baltimore City power.

Paris Carter

Lake Clifton, forward/guard

A 6-4 senior swingman, Carter was All-City/County and second team All-Metro last season in leading the Lakers to the Class 4A state semifinals and the Baltimore City championship. Carter averaged 16 points, eight rebounds, two assists and two steals as a junior.

Velmar Coleman

Walbrook, guard/forward

Considered by many to be the top junior in the city, the 6-4 swingman is expected to be the catalyst of the experienced and talented Warriors. Coleman, who scored 17.3 points, grabbed six rebounds and had three assists a game as a sophomore, has the potential to lead a banner season.

Justin Drummond

McDonogh, guard/forward

Headed to Wagner College in Staten Island (N.Y.), this smooth and athletic senior swingman heads up a talented nucleus that should put the Eagles among the area's top teams. Last season, the 6-4 Drummond averaged 13.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and four assists.

Rudy Gay

Archbishop Spalding, forward

Gay's dramatic rise from top 100 player to the top 10 and the national stage at the Nike summer camp in Indiana is remarkable. The 6-8, 215-pound Gay signed with Connecticut, thanks to his spectacular summer showing following an average junior season. Gay averaged 13.9 points, 7.1 rebounds and 2.6 blocks.

Mitch Guest

Glen Burnie, guard

The catalyst of the Gophers' stunning run to the Class 4A state semifinals, Guest averaged 22.2 points, 5.7 rebounds, 4.4 assists and had 60 steals in 25 games. Deadly from the perimeter, Guest also has the ability to drive the lane despite being just 5-9.

Darnell Harris

St. Frances, guard

Named to the Baltimore Catholic League all-tournament team and second team for the regular season, the 6-1 Harris leads a talented and quick, senior nucleus. Harris averaged 20.1 points, seven rebounds and six assists for the Panthers, who will challenge for the BCL title.

Jamal Smith

Towson Catholic, forward

Smith hopes to lead the Owls back to winning ways after two straight losing seasons following the exit of 2001 Player of the Year Carmelo Anthony. The 6-5 senior forward, who has signed with Wagner College, averaged 17.9 points last season.

Will Thomas

Mt. St. Joseph, center/forward

Last year's Baltimore Catholic League Player of the Year, the 6-8 player would like to lead the Gaels to a repeat BCL title. Thomas, who has signed with up-and-coming George Mason, averaged 16.9 points, 10.1 rebounds and 3.2 blocks in leading the Gaels to their first BCL title in 32 years.

Leon Williams

Cardinal Gibbons, forward

The 6-foot-8 Williams is the main man on what should be the best Crusaders team in years. A senior power forward and Ohio University signee, Williams gained a lot of attention at a national tournament last summer after averaging 14 points and 12 boards as a junior.

Other notable players

Brandon Albert, Glen Burnie; Anthony Baglin, Douglass; Jon Brick, McDonogh; Jesse Brooks, Spalding; Gordon Brown, St. Frances; Ryan Carr, Westminster; Gordon Chase, St. Frances; Brandon Costley, Westminster; Corey Davis, McDonogh; Elliott DeVoe, Annapolis; Brett Foelber, Gibbons; Chris Follard, Century; Chester Frazier, Lake Clifton; Lance Fuller, Woodlawn; Jerrell Green, Southern-Balto.; Ken Hasbrouck, Gibbons; Erin Henderson, Aberdeen; Darren Hopkins, Towson Catholic; Richie Jackson, River Hill; Barry Jenifer, Dunbar; Brian Johnson, Mount St. Joseph; T.J. Ice lands in South Carolina

Photo: Jujuan RobinsonFormer Dunbar standout Jujuan Robinson has landed at Prince Avenue Prep in Pickens, S.C., where he will be finishing prep school . Ice will be an important part of his team success. Because of him and 6'6 wing, Maurice Petty, they have made this obscure prep school in S.C. a team to be recognized.
