Guest - Glen Burnie, basketball Guest,
a 5-foot-8 senior guard, captured Most Valuable Player honors at last weekend's
J.T. Bogle Invitational, where he led the host Gophers to the tournament championship.
In a 65-48 victory over Edgewood in a first-round game Friday, Guest, an
All-Metro selection last season, scored 20 points to go along with eight rebounds,
five assists and three steals. He followed that with a 27-point, six-rebound,
five-assist and three-steal performance Saturday, leading the No.7 Gophers (6-0)
to a 69-57 win over DuVal of Prince George's County in the tournament final. With
his 47 points in the two games, Guest, who scored 41 against Patuxent two weeks
ago, became only the fourth Gopher to surpass the 1,000-point plateau. For
the season, Guest is averaging 26.6 points, five rebounds, four steals and four
assists per game.

December
17, 2003Newly No. 1 St. Frances too much for Gibbons St. Frances
is one of the last boys basketball teams an opponent wants to fly up and down
the court with trading baskets. Upstart Cardinal Gibbons got into that kind of
game with the top-ranked Panthers last night and suffered its first loss, 96-85,
at home. The
teams shot extremely well in the up-tempo game. Darnell Harris led the victors
of coach William Wells with 25 points. Gordon "Gus" Chase and Gordon
Brown added 21 each as the Panthers shot 56 percent from the field, hitting 34
of 61 shots. Two other Panthers were in double figures as Darron Edwards scored
18 and Rashawn Alexander had 11.
Gibbons shot 53 percent on 32 of 60 attempts,
but the Panthers (8-1) were able to overcome Leon Williams' 31 points and 13 rebounds.
Kenny Hasbrouck had 22 points, Brett Foelber added 16 and Mike Grace had three
three-pointers and 13 points for Gibbons (7-1). Williams, a 6-foot-8 center who
is headed to Ohio University, had 27 points through three periods as the Crusaders
took a 74-71 lead into the final eight minutes. St. Frances simply outran
the Crusaders in the last period, outscoring the hosts 25-11 at Gibbons' O. Ray
Mullis Gym. The Panthers sank 12 of 17 free-throw attempts, including 10 in a
row at one point, to pull away in the last eight minutes. "It concerned
me early that we were trading baskets with them," said Gibbons coach Bob
Flynn, who appears to have built a Baltimore Catholic League contender at the
southwest school. "St. Frances is so good, so consistent offensively.
It's so hard to get stops on them. They wore us down at the end." Despite
the fact that Gibbons might be the most improved team in the league, the Panthers
were not worried. "No, we're veterans and we've been here before," said
Chase, who also had eight rebounds. "We play a team game and stepped it up
and got the job done." Harris, a flashy senior guard, definitely stepped
it up and was 6-for-6 at the line in the final period. "Yeah, we had to step
it up in the last couple minutes," said Harris. "We decided this was
a win we needed to build our confidence playing as a team." Chase and
Harris agreed that moving to No. 1 in The Sun poll yesterday got the Panthers
revved up. "It motivated us even more because there are lot of doubters out
there thinking we aren't No. 1," said Chase. "We've got to hold
our ground. Their fans were saying that they were No. 1. But we beat them three
times last year and we're No. 1." Copyright © 2003, The Baltimore

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR Erin
Henderson
Aberdeen, senior, quarterback Told for years that he would
never measure up to his brother, E.J., the former Maryland All-American linebacker,
Henderson issued a resounding response this season. The response came with
touchdown passes (20, with 1,580 yards passing) and touchdown runs (eight, with
883 yards rushing), but most importantly, it came with true grit. The 6-foot-3,
225-pound quarterback, who is headed to Maryland, did everything for the Eagles
- he was their leading tackler, too, as a linebacker - but no statistic could
trump his gutsy performance in Aberdeen's 33-25 overtime victory over Potomac
Wednesday in the Class 2A state title game. Essentially playing on one leg
because of a badly sprained ankle, and without his contact lenses, which fell
out early in the game, Henderson broke out of a funk to throw three touchdown
passes. His second was a 17-yard, game-tying strike to Ryan McVey with 2:17 to
play. His final one, an 11-yard connection with Devron Galloway in overtime, was
the game-winner. Said Aberdeen coach Joe Harbert: "He's a warrior.
There's nothing more that can you say about the kid."

Davis, McDonogh A tremendous leaper who also plays basketball for the Eagles,
the senior wide receiver stands 6-feet and weighs 180 pounds - an imposing threat
for any defender. His 42 catches for 14 touchdowns and 560 yards ranked among
the area's best.
FIRST TEAM DEFENSE Cameron
Goldberg, McDonogh The 6-6, 260-pound two-way lineman accumulated 12 sacks
and 82 tackles. Stanford, Duke and California have offered scholarships, and Virginia,
Maryland and Wake Forest also are interested in him.
Keith
Mallory, Woodlawn The gifted, 6-3, 170-pound senior returned two of his
six interceptions for touchdowns from his defensive back position, and made 33
solo tackles among his total of 47. Colorado has offered him a scholarship, and
Boston College, Morgan State, Delaware State and Howard are interested.
All-Anne
Arundel County football teamsFIRST TEAM DEFENSE Brandon
Albert, Glen Burnie Extremely agile and athletic for a 6-7, 320-pounder,
Albert anchored both the offensive and defensive lines of the Gophers. On defense,
Albert was an immovable force who used his quick feet to run down opposing ball
carriers and make 65 tackles.

St. Frances Last season: 20-7, No. 11 Few teams, if any, combine

enough returning firepower led by Will Thomas, Brian Johnson and Leroy Mack to
make another run. 5. Arch. Spalding Last season: 26-7, No.
6 It's a matter of how fast the somewhat unproven cast around Rudy Gay
and Jesse Brooks develops for the Cavaliers to regain their BCL title of two years

graduation, the defending Class 1A state champion Poets, who have eight state
titles since 1993, expect to rebuild around 6-7 Barry Jenifer. 7. McDonogh

Baglin and Troy Smith, the Ducks are ready to return to glory. 9. Cardinal

going. 19. Westminster Last season: 11-11, unranked Five

make the Owls the team to beat in Carroll County. 20. Lansdowne Last

5-foot-7 guard who was All-Metro last season as a junior, Bolden averaged 17.3
