Select looses in the Finals of the BET Pro-AM

Select plays in this yearly event sponsored by BET. This year Select was attempting to get back to there winning ways from 2003 where they won this Championship. This year the teams in this event where some annual foes such as NY Panthers, TT Playaz and DC Assault; and there where some new faces such as Team I-270, Philly Crusaders, BABC and another team from Buffalo. Select was matched up against the playaz for our first game where we won 76-70. In the final four match up we played BABC in a close match that went down to the wire with Nate Irby hitting 2 free throws with no time left and Select winning 72-71. In the Cahmpionship Game we played a famliar face with Coach Schofield's Philly Lutheran summer team (Philly Crusaders). This was a tough battle with Select holding a good lead at half being up by 10. Philly came out and had a great 9-0 run to start off the third quarter and at that point the lead went back and forth for the duration of the game. Philly had too much rebounding power and Select took ill advised shots at the end where Philly stretched the lead to six and won 76-70 over Select. Next up for Select will be the Playaz Ball July 14-15 at Seton Hall University.

Photo: Robbie JacksonThe 7'0 center from Aberdeen HS will be attending Prince Avenue Prep next year to work on his strenght and to get the qualifying scores for college. Robbie had to get everything straight about his premature verbal committment to Villanova and let perspective coached know that his recruiting is now WIDE OPEN!!! Many prep schools where looking for this back-to-the-basket centers abilities, Robbie decided that South Carolina would be good for him because he enjoyed talking with Coach Knight and he is closer to some of his family who lives in South Carolina. Robbie will be joining Prince Avneue to take a few classes beginning in August. Congratulations and good luck!!!

Select fared well by winning all three games and capturing the title vs. the Faifax Stars. "It was a great time to continue to develop together and set up rotations" stated Coach Bowden. Harris heading to Winchendon Academy

Catholic League Co-Player of the Year Ricky Harris will be attending Winchendon Prep school next season. Harris will take this opportunity to get stronger and also to work on his academics. There were a few possiblilities for Ricky regarding which prep school to go to, but he is following in fellow Baltimore stand out Kenny Minor who also attended Winchendon and he fared well eventually signing with Manhattan. Ricky has been playing exceptionally good for the Select team this spring/summer. He has adjusted his game because he is playing with a team full of good players, similar to what he will see in college. Ricky has proven that he can score at all levels by playing great at the Kingwood Classic in Houston this spring, the Adidas Memorial Day Classic at University of Maryland and getting on the All Tourament Team at the BET Pro-Am. Ricky has received many calls from potential schools because of his exceptioanl play so far and July that trend should continue. Congratualtions Ricky, good luck!!!

Baltimore Select brings home the Championship at the 2005 Adidas Memorial Day Classic

The Select 17U team won teh Adidas Memorial Day Classic held at teh Comcast Center on the campus of the University of Maryland with a victory over the Michigan Mustangs 67-58 in the Cahmpionship game. Select defeateda strong Houston Superstars team in the final four with only 6 players and "an exceptional 3-2 defense" according to Coach Goodie. The team was lead by Baltimore City Player of the Year and 1st Team All Metro player Rodney Spruill. "Spruill was by far one of the best players in the tournament" stated Jeff Bowden. "We couldn't have done it without him." In addition to Spruill, Select had a strong guaplay from Co-Catholic League Player of the Year Ricky Harris, Jermaine Cooper and Nate Irby. Sgawn Alexander, who is now in his second tournament with Select, was a definite inside/outside threat despite havinga slight back problem. Chris Moore was at the top of that 3-2 zone and with his 7 foot wing spand, it made it difficult for the Houston team to get into there offense. "Delano Johnson was the most intimidating person on the floor throughout the tournament; his reboundinga nd physical play was invaluable" said Jeff Bowden. "We are finally starting to gel as a team and everyone is playing their roles and contributing to the total team concept" stated Coach Goodie.
