Select's 16's Try to continue winning ways at Charlie Weber/Penn State....

June 23, 2002

The 16 under team felt confident going into the Weber tournament after feeling each other out a few weeks back at the Best of the Best tournament. The team ended up with a good weekend, going 3-1, eventually losing to the Baltimore Blue team in their final four match-up. The playoffs for the 16 under bracket at Penn State consisted of three Baltimore teams: Baltimore Select, Baltimore Bombers and Baltimore Blue. The Select/Blue matchup was one that both teams were looking forward to!!!!

The final four matchup was close throughout with Select leading the entire game...until the fourth quarter when the Blue team went on an 8-0 run with careless ball-handling and bad shots by the Select team. With that run, the tank was empty for the Select kids and Blue went on to a 73-63 win behind key shots by Jamal Smith, a strong force to be reckoned with during the next two years.

Select box scores from Charlie Weber/Penn State:

vs: Long Island Roadrunners 85-50: Justin Drummond - 18, Barry Jenifer - 6, Moe Martin - 10, Darren Hopkins - 18, Divine Morris - 5, Joshua Johnson - 18 and Corey Davis - 10.

vs: Keystone Gators 64-44: Justin Drummond - 10, Barry Jenifer - 14, Moe Martin - 7, Darren Hopkins - 10, Divine Morris - 9, Joshua Johnson - 9 and Corey Davis - 5.

16 under Baltimore Select Team wins Best Of the Best Tournament

In early April at the Charlie Weber Tournament (Villanova), the 16 under team showed flashes that they were going to be a good team. At that time the team went 2-1 and missed moving out of pool play. The team then moved to the locall AAU's and did not get out a win. Everyone wondering what was going to happen for the future tournaments.

We were using the Best of the Best tournament as a test to see whether the players had gotten themselves into a different mind-set of playing hard and being consistent. With a few changes on the team; additions of Divine Morris (Douglas) and Darren Hopkins (Edmonson), this 16 under team should be on its way to finishing the summer tournaments off strong.

This past weekend in Germantown, Md this team took all the teams by storm and beat up on all their opponents. The team played well together in order to get themselves into the position to play Richmond Squires, a long-time rival of Baltimore Select in the finals. Unfortunately for our players it got too late and teh Squires team had to forfeit in order to get there kids home. Justin Drummond made Tournament MVP and Divine Morris, Barry Jenifer and Darren Hopkins made All Tournament Team. The team went 5-0 in order to win the Best of the Best 16-under Championship.

The play of Divine Morris as the new PG of the team was a big difference. He brings a calm to the position that was desparately needed and with better play out of all the team, they are looking forward to there next tournament which is Charlie Weber @ Penn State University June 21-23.

Select box scores from the Best of the Best:

vs: NJ Trailblazers 52-20: Alex White - DNP, Justin Drummond - 12, Barry Jenifer - 10, Moe Martin - 4, Erin Henderson - 7, Jason Loughery - 0, Darren Hopkins - 10, Tyson Jacobs - 0, Divine Morris - 6 and Corey Davis - 3.

vs: Virginia Elite 77-56: Alex White - DNP, Justin Drummond - 18, Barry Jenifer - 4, Moe Martin - 8, Erin Henderson - 10, Jason Loughery - 3, Darren Hopkins - 18, Tyson Jacobs - 5, Divine Morris - 8 and Corey Davis - 3.

vs. Team Conn: Forfeit

vs. Eastern Shore 58-39: Alex White - 7, Justin Drummond - 14, Barry Jenifer - 8, Moe Martin - 2, Erin Henderson - 10, Jason Loughery - 2, Darren Hopkins - 8, Tyson Jacobs - DNP, Divine Morris - 4 and Corey Davis - 3.

The Adidas Big Time Tournament Teams have been selected!!!

The teams have been set for the biggest tournament of the Summer, the Adidas Big Time Tournament. The Baltimore Select team will join over 340 other teams from all over the United States and Canada to compete. This is the fourth year that the Baltimore Select Team has had the privelege to participate in this tournament. This year will be a little different, because of their great play last year, reaching the final four of the open division, loosing to the eventual champion Long Island Panthers; this years team will have the bulls-eye on them and teams will be out to take us out. It is a role that the coaches feel will make this years team play hard to ensure as much success as we had last year.

Last years team was led by Carmello Anthony (Syracuse), who is the all-time leading scorer in Big Time history and 2001 Big Time All-Tournament, Todd Galloway (Forida State) ranked 44th all-time Big Time scorers and 2001 Big Time All-Tournament , Kenny Minor - 2001 Big Time All-Tournament (Manhatton), Gary Neal - 2001 Big Time All-Tournament (LaSalle), Jai Lewis(George Mason), Kevin Steenberge (Richmond), James "JT" Taylor, Tynell Duckley, Denard Abraham, Matt Stevenson and Jaz Cowans (George Washington).

Bob Gibbons "Tournament of Champions"

It was another successful weekend for the Baltimore Select 17 under team at the Tournament of Champions Memorial Weekend. The Select organization would like to thank Bob Gibbons for allowing our team to participate in a great tournament.

The team was paired in the "Select" tournament with some of the best players in the country. The team went 3-0 in pool play and then won the final eight and final four games. The team then met one of their fierce rivals, for the second straight tournament, the NJ Playaz (Tim Thomas Playaz) in the Championship Game. The team could not get in sink as foul trouble and poor decision making was the difference in the game. The half time score was 38-28 (playaz), the select team got it to with 5 early in the second half, 42-37, but could not hold eventually losing 72-59. All in all it was another opportunity for the select players to show there skillz on the court in front of the writers. Tyler Smith and Gerald Brown both made the TOC All Tournament Team.

On a down note, Denard Abraham, Select's promising 6'8 center, injured his foot early in the first game vs. Cleveland, Ohio and could not return for the entire weekend. His help was needed in the championship game against the Playaz. We wish him a healthy recovery.

The Baltimore Select Team fared well in the Third Annual Southern Invitational at the University of Virginia this past weekend. Photo: Tyler SmithTyler Smith, part of Baltimore Select's strong guard rotation, made the Southern Invitational All Tournament Team. The team went 3-0 in pool play and started the playoffs with an impressive win against a gritty Raleigh Heat team. After the Heat win, the Select team faced a long time Adidas rival, the Tim Thomas Playaz (Gold) team. The game was a tight throughout until with six minutes left, their press turned the tides and the Select team turned the ball over three straight possessions and the Playaz took a five point lead up to a double digit lead in less than a minute. It was a difficult task getting back into after the costly turnovers. The Select team had the momentum going into this quarterfinal game and played a great weekend of basketball.
